The data presented in this work come from a cloze test (or rather, a textual gap-filling test) created as an entry test for native (and nonnative alike) freshmen at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bergamo. The article presents the test rationale and discusses some of its results with a qualitative approach, essentially based on error analysis and from which a number of strategic, as well as linguistic, shortcomings in handling semantically and syntactically complex academic texts are visible.
