Obiettivo del lavoro è far luce sull’ambiguità riguardante la natura del legame esistente tra sovra redditività e vantaggio competitivo falsificando l’assunto, condiviso in modo più o meno esplicito da gran parte degli studi in ambito strategico, secondo il quale il vantaggio competitivo è una condizione necessaria e sufficiente per il conseguimento profitto economico. Se c’è un profitto economico stabile allora vuol dire che in qualche modo si è creata una posizione di vantaggio per l’impresa e, viceversa, se l’impresa detiene una posizione di vantaggio allora genererà sovra redditività. Muovendo da tale relazione causa effetto, nell’ambito di molte ricerche in ambito strategico (ci si riferisce in particolare ai modelli basati sul posizionamento competitivo, di tipo strutturale e resource-based) le due nozioni di vantaggio competitivo e sovra redditività hanno finito per sovrapporsi generando un’ambiguità tale da rendere difficile la comprensione dei confini definitori dei due concetti arrivando, in alcuni casi, addirittura ad ipotizzare una sorta di sostanziale equivalenza fra i due. Tuttavia, l’ambiguità che si è formata tra vantaggio competitivo e sovra redditività non è supportata da alcun fondamento razionale. Le due nozioni, infatti, sono logicamente e concettualmente distinte. Alla luce di queste considerazioni la ricerca si pone l’obiettivo di chiarire la relazione esistente tra vantaggio competitivo e sovra redditività, negando, falsificando l’assunto secondo il quale il vantaggio competitivo è condizione necessaria e sufficiente per il conseguimento di profitto economico. Questo obiettivo e l’analisi che da esso discende affondano le proprie radici “metodologiche”, seppur con una certa dose di semplificazione, nella teoria delle congetture e confutazioni (o falsificazionismo) di Popper, nella quale il filosofo austriaco, delineando una teoria del metodo scientifico fortemente critica nei confronti di qualunque concezioni induttiva della scienza, sostiene che se nessun numero di esempi confermanti può giustificare la verità di una proposizione, un solo esempio contrario consente di dimostrarne la falsità. Partendo da questa impostazione teorica, il lavoro in oggetto è volto ad individuare l’esistenza di almeno una condizione nella quale vantaggio competitivo e sovra redditività siano tra loro indipendenti, nella quale cioè è possibile che un’impresa pur beneficiando di una posizione di vantaggio non riesca a generare profitto economico e/o nella quale un’impresa pur in totale assenza di vantaggi riesca a conseguire sovra redditività, falsificando, in tale modo l’assunto che considera il vantaggio competitivo una condizione necessaria e sufficiente per il conseguimento di profitti economici.
This research is aimed at clarifying the nature of the relationship between abnormal earnings and competitive advantage falsifying the assumption, subscribed to by a large part of the strategic studies, under which competitive advantage is a necessary and sufficient condition for the achievement of economic profit. Starting from this cause-effect relationship, within a lot of studies in the strategic field (particular reference is made to the structural competitive positioning studies and on the resource based approaches) the two notions of competitive advantage and abnormal earnings ended up overlapping, generating an ambiguity that makes difficult the comprehension of the definitional boundaries of the two concepts, ending up hypothesizing a substantial equivalence between them. However, the ambiguity existing between competitive advantage and abnormal earnings is not supported by any rational fundamentals. The two notions, in fact, are logically and conceptually distinct. In the light of these reflections, the research is aimed at clarifying the relationship existing between competitive advantage and abnormal earnings, denying, falsifying, the assumption under which the competitive advantage is a necessary and sufficient condition for the achievement of economic profits. This objective and the analysis related to it have their “methodological” roots, even if with some simplifications, in Popper’s theory of Conjectures and Refutations, in which the Austrian philosopher, repudiating the classical observationalist/ inductivist account of scientific method, argues that if even a lot of supporting examples do not allow the validation of the truth of a proposition, just one example allows the demonstration of its falsity. Starting from this theoretical framework, the work is aimed at identifying the existence of at least one condition under which competitive advantage and abnormal earnings are independent , namely, a condition in which an enterprise that has an advantageous position does not generate economic profit and / or in which an enterprise achieves abnormal earnings even if does not benefit of any advantageous position, falsifying, in this way, the assumption that considers that competitive advantage a necessary and sufficient condition for the achievement of economic profits.
