The sophist Claudius Aelianus filled his Varia Historia and De natura animalium with a lot of historical information about the Greeks, frequently unique. The book does not fail to face some basic problem: textual questions, chapters-like-catalogue on various topics, fragments preserved on his name or to him assigned etc. but, for the first time, it considers on the whole and systematically this material, searching for themes and opinions and taking into consideration all the passages about historical figures or states from archaic to the Hellenistic age. Aelianus actually shows a coherent sight about Greek history and its protagonists as well as own developed ideas, for instance about atheism or tyranny. The volume investigate his cultural milieu and his links with Plutarch, Pausanias, Lucians and Athenaeus as well as the literature of Varia and of course classical historical literature.
