Il volume, in due tomi, quando apparve, veniva a colmare una lacuna nell'editoria italiana: una traduzione con un commento scientificamente fondato delle 'Epustulae ad familiares' di Cicerone. La traduzione è stata condotta sul testo teubneriano di Shackleton Bailey, per cui si è dovuto rinunciare all'ordine cronologico, invalso in tutti i commenti e in tutte le traduzioni a partire dai primi anni dell'Ottocento, per tornare a quello presente nei mss. Ciò ha comportato, ovviamente, ripetizioni e qualche difficoltà sul piano dell'esegesi storica. Ma tali inconvenienti appaiono compensati da una migliore intelligenza del carteggio da un punto di vista letterario, perché, come dimostrato nella 'Storia critica del testo', i singoli libri in origine formavano unità indipendenti e rispondevano a criteri editoriali che si è cercato di chiarire nelle introduzioni messe in testa a ciascun libro della raccolta. Il mio contributo è consistito: nella curatela generale, che va ben al di là di una semplice attività organizzativa; nella stesura della 'Storia critica del testo', che cerca di chiarire il farsi della raccolta e la sua fortuna attraverso i secoli; nell'introduzione, traduzione e commento dei libri VII, VIII, IX, X e XIV. When this two-volume book was first published, it plugged a gap in the Italian editorial market: in fact, it was the first Italian translation of Cicero's 'Epistulae ad familiares' with a scholarly commentary. The translation is based on Teubner's text edited by Shackleton Bailey. This choice implied the refusal of the chronological order, which has been traditionally respected in the commentaries and in the translations since the early nineteenth century, and the return to the disposition indicated by the manuscripts. While such a approach is not deprived of problems (e.g., repetitions and difficulties in the historical commentary), it allows a clearer comprehension of the epistolary from a literary perspective: as the 'Storia critica del testo' shows, each book originally formed an independent unity and obeyed to specific editorial criteria, which are described in the introductions to the single books. I personally coordinated the whole volume both on an organizational level and on a scientific one and wrote the 'Storia critica del testo', which aims to clarify the making of Cicero's epistolary and its 'Nachleben' through the centuries; moreover, I took care of the translation and the commentary of books VII, VIII, IX, X and XIV.
