Abstract

A physician and the founder of psychoanalysis, Freud claimed from the beginning that the newly found discipline was to take over the role of philosophy and to transform metaphysics into meta-psychology. Psychoanalysis is no special sector of medicine, it is psychology, more precisely “psychology of the deep” insofar as it reaches beyond consciousness, toward the unconscious. Freud was the scientific discoverer of the unconscious, and he devised a method for bringing its contents, the thoughts and wishes buried in it, into conscious view. He considered psychoanalysis the basis of biology, psychiatry, cultural studies, mythology, religious sciences, literature, and linguistics.
