This study on historical anthropology retraces the steps of Gypsy slavery in the Rumanian principalities, paying particular attention to the situation in Moldavia. The result of direct studies in the Rumanian archives, it is a first anthropological read on such a vast and lengthy, yet little studied, subject. Demonstrating the internal structure of Gypsy slaves and their living conditions, the study highlights the common aspects and the heterogeneity of the situations at the same time. Terminated in the mid-nineteenth century, slavery considerably influenced Rom/non Rom relations, so much so that a knowledge of it is fundamental for understanding the situation of Roms in Rumania today.
