The book translates the first 9 books of Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum (12th-13th cent.), which contain the most of information concernig pre-literate Scandinavia, its peoples, beliefs, behaviours. The translation is based on the Olrik-Ræder Copenhagen edition (1931) and accompanied by a detailed commentary (Introductions, by L. Koch, Footnotes, glossaries, by A. Cipolla).
