The Chapter explores the relevance and implications of environmental sustainability in International Disaster Law (IDL). First, the meaning of environmental sustainability will be elucidated. The study examines the notion of environmental sustainability, highlighting how it has evolved within the broader discourse on sustainable development. Attempts will be made to analyse environmental sustainability in relation to interrelated concepts such as environmental protection and climate change. Then, the legal nature of environmental sustainability will be discussed in light of the evolution undergone in relevant international jurisprudence. The study will undertake a two-tier approach. On the one hand, the article will explore what will be called the “sustainable development tier”, examining whether the field of sustainable development has duly considered the relevance of disasters.
