The Aeschylean forms of repetition are various. This essay considers some of them as clues for exploring the development of Aeschylus’ style. Two primary kinds of repetition are analysed: the refrain of the so-called ephymnia and the repetition of exact words uttered by two different characters in contiguous dialogic verses. By comparing the data across the extant plays and over time, it is possible to detect the poet’s increasing interest in this latter form of reprise.

Abstract

The Aeschylean forms of repetition are various. This essay considers some of them as clues for exploring the development of Aeschylus’ style. Two primary kinds of repetition are analysed: the refrain of the so-called ephymnia and the repetition of exact words uttered by two different characters in contiguous dialogic verses. By comparing the data across the extant plays and over time, it is possible to detect the poet’s increasing interest in this latter form of reprise.
