German includes a large number of particles, one class of which is formed by modal particles. With modal particles, the speaker refers to the attitudes, expectations, and assumptions of the listener or speaker or reinforces the proposition of the utterance. Individual modal particles have homonyms in other particle classes, such as conjunctions or adverbs. Furthermore, a single modal particle can express different meanings, depending, among other things, on the context of the utterance or the type of sentence. These properties, and the fact that they have no equivalent word class in other languages, make modal particles difficult to learn for GFL learners. In the print Langenscheidt Großwörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache (LGDaF), published in 2024, a selection of modal particles is examined for the representation of the individual meanings. This representation is compared with the meanings and their representation in the Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache (DWDS). The analysis shows that the learner’s dictionary provides users with sufficient information for the correct use of modal particles without overwhelming them with a plethora of differentiations.
