The contribution deals with religious education in the Republic of Türkiye in the light of the constitutional principle of secularism (laiklik), the strong religious roots of the country, and religious minority rights. The aim is to reflect on the State’s approach towards the role of religion in private and public education, as well as some major challenges posed by compulsory religious teaching in public schools in combination with the “religious dimension” of Turkish citizenship, i.e., the relevance of students and parents’ religious affiliation on matters of dispensation from religious learning.
