Mario Segre’s work is internationally renowned for its precious contributions to Greek epigraphy. Less attention has been devoted to his study of Greek religious practices. This chapter highlights how, by studying inscriptions, Segre has published on several key aspects of ancient Greek religion. A primary goal is to demonstrate how inextricably interconnected the fields of Epigraphy and History of Religions are, albeit today, they belong to two different academic disciplines. One could speculate that, with the gradual establishment of the field of History of Religions in Italy in the 1950s, he could have dedicated more attention to investigating the religious lives of the Dodecanese islands. Alongside this main line of analysis, the chapter reflects on the relationship between Segre and Giulio Jacopi. These scholars testify to a tragic symbiosis between professional and personal matters, since the antisemitism and academic jealousy of the latter may have had an impact on the destruction of the former’s life and family.
