The recent worldwide spread of English requires to reconceptualize its teaching to reflect its increased use among non-native speakers, as well as to sustain teachers in meeting their learners’ new communication needs. Studies on the new status of English highlight the need to overcome traditional conceptualizations of English teaching and Teacher Education principles to develop teachers’ awareness of current English and of learners’ new competences. After an introduction on the status of English in international contexts, issues about its teaching in areas needed in Teacher Education programs as Spoken Language, Language Awareness and Communication Strategies are presented and discussed.

Abstract
The recent worldwide spread of English requires to reconceptualize its teaching to reflect its increased use among non-native speakers, as well as to sustain teachers in meeting their learners’ new communication needs. Studies on the new status of English highlight the need to overcome traditional conceptualizations of English teaching and Teacher Education principles to develop teachers’ awareness of current English and of learners’ new competences. After an introduction on the status of English in international contexts, issues about its teaching in areas needed in Teacher Education programs as Spoken Language, Language Awareness and Communication Strategies are presented and discussed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
