Linguistic commentary is not present as a fixed part of the text in 18th-century bibliographic Journals. However, comments on the language of the books reviewed are quite frequent also in the Florentine Novelle letterarie, directed by Giovanni Lami; such observations serve to put in good or bad light the work reviewed. The Florentine weekly magazine has presented to Cisalpine readers numerous translations from French and other European languages; it often dwells on the description of the quality of the language, also in relation to the possibility of lexical enrichment for the Italian language.

Abstract

Linguistic commentary is not present as a fixed part of the text in 18th-century bibliographic Journals. However, comments on the language of the books reviewed are quite frequent also in the Florentine Novelle letterarie, directed by Giovanni Lami; such observations serve to put in good or bad light the work reviewed. The Florentine weekly magazine has presented to Cisalpine readers numerous translations from French and other European languages; it often dwells on the description of the quality of the language, also in relation to the possibility of lexical enrichment for the Italian language.
