Our experience of university theatre started fifteen years ago within the context of the Advanced School of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators (University of Bologna at Forlì), i.e. a Faculty where language and cultural mediators, translators and interpreters, are trained. These professional figures are geared to work in contexts that are characterised by dialogue and intercultural encounters. The activities carried out in the university theatre workshop for Spanish as a Second Language provide participants with a dynamic and creative way to start searching their own identity(ies) through the exploration of a foreign culture. Such search is essential when moving from adolescence to early adulthood. The aim of the present work is to illustrate a theatrical project carried out with a group of Italian students who agreed to face the following challenge, i.e. approaching the Mexican culture through the great poetry by Octavio Paz. From the threshold of The Labyrinth of Solitude (Paz, 1993), students voluntarily lost direction amongst images and verses and set out on a multifaceted crossing where identities can be discovered by means of the construction of characters. The works by Luigi Pirandello served as theatrical masks, in order to wander in the labyrinth, and became gates and bridges towards communion.
