Facial shape is integral to facial beauty, with an oval face being considered youthful, healthy, and attractive by individuals of all ethnicities. A smooth, slightly convex temporal contour with inconspicuous anterior bony margins and smooth transitions from the forehead through the temples and cheekbones is considered the ideal. The anterior part of the temporal fossa houses the lateral orbital fat pad in the superficial plane, while the posterior part is covered by the lateral temporal-cheek fat pad. The bony margins of the zygomatic arch, temporal line and lateral orbital rim become more prominent, and narrowing of the upper face contrasts adversely with high cheekbones or a fuller midface. The anterior temporal skin is thin, mobile and hairless, while the posterior aspect is thick, less mobile, highly vascularized, and has abundant hair. Temporal skin is tightly adherent to the superficial fat layer and prone to actinic damage and dyspigmentation.
