The present research applies a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the ancient medieval landscape of the western portion of the Ravenna plain. The study combines the analysis of the edited medieval written sources, especially the contracts between landowners and farmers (8th-13th centuries), with the archaeobotanical results from the archaeological site of the castrum of Zagonara (11th-15th centuries) and from off-site material collected from cores in medieval marshland contexts (11th-13th centuries). The research aims to lay the foundations for a dialogue between the historical source ("perceived landscape") and the scientific-archaeological data (environment), with the aim of understanding all the different dimensions of the concept of landscape declined in a medieval lowland context
