In this contribution, several trends in the German neologisms formed during the pandemic period are identified, building on the new lexicon taking shape since the beginning of 2020. The reference source used for this purpose is the Neologismenwörterbuch in the OWID (Online-Wortschatz-Informationssystem Deutsch), created by the IDS (Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache Mannheim). The brief examination carried out shows that most of these neologisms consist of nouns, specifically compound nouns, some being hybrids, with two or three components.

Abstract

In this contribution, several trends in the German neologisms formed during the pandemic period are identified, building on the new lexicon taking shape since the beginning of 2020. The reference source used for this purpose is the Neologismenwörterbuch in the OWID (Online-Wortschatz-Informationssystem Deutsch), created by the IDS (Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache Mannheim). The brief examination carried out shows that most of these neologisms consist of nouns, specifically compound nouns, some being hybrids, with two or three components.
