Following Davanzo Poli's studies, the article deals with seventeenth-century fashion in Venice. Until the last decades of the Seicento, female fashion in the Serenissima maintains its unique and recognisable features, unlike what occurs in many of the most relevant states in Western Europe. Visual arts, mainly dated paintings and prints, prove to be very helpful in describing how womanly dresses evolved during the century and which models were in vogue among the Venetian ladies, before French fashionable indications began to gain influence in the 1680’s.
