In this study, we reflect on the status of phraseology in relationship with teaching specialized French, by following the evolution over time of the main methodologies of FFL. We consider phraseology in a didactic context, as well as the metalanguage that is adopted for the presentation of teaching material in FFL textbooks. Our interest is more specifically directed at business French, which benefits from a flourishing tradition of teaching resources throughout the centuries. After describing our theoretical framework, namely that of Explanatory and Combinatorial Lexicology, and our methodology, we examine some significant stages in FFL methodologies, from the Middle Ages to our times. For each stage, we describe its main characteristics and some examples taken from textbooks, which allows us to reveal some trends relating to the status of the phraseological dimension for the teaching/learning of terms.
