La grande considerazione nel corso del Cinquecento e del Seicento della Civil conversazione, per usare il titolo di un fortunato libro di Stefano Guazzo, viene sempre più educata e ammaestrata al silenzio e al segreto in ambito spagnolo. Essa convive e alimenta generi letterari tra loro diversissimi, dall’eloquenza muta dell’emblematica alla trattatistica politica, dalla figura del segretario a quella del malinconico. Il tema del silenzio e dell’uso regolato della lingua è centrale nell’arte del buon governo del principe e della sopravvivenza del cortigiano o del segretario nel labirintico mondo della corte. E tuttavia sempre più nel corso del XVI e del XVII secolo la disciplina del silenzio e la custodia oris, diventano una istanza fondatrice e essenziale della vita di tutti gli uomini, dell’uomo in generale, del cum versari.
