This chapter delivers an in-depth examination of local governments within the U.S. constitutional architecture. The analysis starts from one of the fundamental principles at the basis of the Constitution, namely the separation of powers. Although this principle is often analyzed regarding the relationship between the federation and states, it is a fact that local authorities have played (and still play) a central role in achieving the protection of constitutional freedoms.
