There is a minor strand of monetary production in the East, attested by a very small number of extremely rare issues, associated with Elagabalus' victory and imperial investiture, which was endowed with a very ambitious and compelling ideological message emphasizing the lineage of the new emperor. This production includes gold aurei and quinarii and silver denarii with Latin legends, alongside with tetradrachms with Greek legends. All these issues were probably minted in Edessa in Mesopotamia, mostly in the immediate aftermath of the death of Macrinus. This contribution presents for the first time all this materials together, and discuss a plausible reconstruction of the historical framework in which they were produced.

Abstract
There is a minor strand of monetary production in the East, attested by a very small number of extremely rare issues, associated with Elagabalus' victory and imperial investiture, which was endowed with a very ambitious and compelling ideological message emphasizing the lineage of the new emperor. This production includes gold aurei and quinarii and silver denarii with Latin legends, alongside with tetradrachms with Greek legends. All these issues were probably minted in Edessa in Mesopotamia, mostly in the immediate aftermath of the death of Macrinus. This contribution presents for the first time all this materials together, and discuss a plausible reconstruction of the historical framework in which they were produced.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
