Thomas Carew and Inigo Jones’s Coelum Britannicum has been described as ‘the’ Caroline masque par excellence. This masque interweaves key themes such as the Union of the Crowns and the balance between idealization and reality, and reflects on the degree of authorial liberty admitted during the Personal Rule of Charles I. This chapter provides a close reading of Coelum Britannicum, showing that Carew and Jones found a language for the dynamics of aspiration and influence at the Caroline court by drawing on the astrological ideas thematized by Giordano Bruno in the main source of the masque, Lo Spaccio de la Bestia Trionfante. It also includes an introduction to the historical, literary, and performance-based contexts of the masque and to its critical fortune.
