Risk and risk management are long-standing matters of public debate, professional concern and academic research. Because of their nature, risk and risk management culture as well as practices evolve over time and are sensitive to the ever-changing context of reference. They are also intrinsically connected with external shocks, notwithstanding the latter being of an economic, political, social, environmental, regulatory, cultural or other, different nature. As a consequence, scientific research on risk and risk management is continually being revisited, updated and extended. The results of the substantial research efforts made by 26 researchers belonging to the European Risk Research Network (ERRN) are proudly collected and systematised in this book, which is extremely rich in themes discussed, viewpoints assumed, and settings investigated throughout its 12 chapters. The book has the potential to improve awareness and advance knowledge in the complex and changeable risk and risk management fields of study and work. The interweaving of topical and contemporary issues, unusual and under-investigated contexts, and differentiated and complementary viewpoints and research approaches on the same themes enriches the academic literature in several disciplines including (risk) management, accounting, finance and corporate governance. Practitioners in these fields may also learn about determinants, developments, and consequences of risk, risk management and risk disclosure in diverse circumstances and contexts. The overview of how risk management and risk disclosure are enacted in such settings may also help practitioners derive recommendations on how to deal with key issues for which they are responsible, while scholars may be incentivized to formulate and pursue new research ideas on relevant areas. In so doing, we hope the book will reach the general public and, thanks to the scientific nature and rigorous research design of each study, provide a reliable source of information to those readers with a propensity to deepen their understanding and knowledge of relevant, current topics that are a matter of debate in newspapers and specialist journals.
