This chapter aims at providing a view on the Italian context, with a specific focus on the role and the characteristics of the Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Adopting a single case study approach, the chapter aims to answer the following research questions: (1) Which are the main characteristics of DSO in Italy? (2) Which are the main factors that have led to the establishment of several DSOs in the same territory? (3) Is there a link between the DSO number and the energy communities in the same area?
