Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, an interest continued in European medical literature for the phenomenon of St Vitus’ dance within which (as already between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) the case of tarantism could also find its place, as a species versus a genus. It is after all this tradition of dissertations that, in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, provided material and ideas for the invention of the category of choreomania. The recent new critical readings that have found it interesting to focus the spotlight on that concept, on its assumptions and cultural implications, will gain further depth from a careful consideration of the scientific discourse that, over a couple of centuries, had reasoned along the modern age of the clinical cases that were understood as its manifestations.

Abstract
Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, an interest continued in European medical literature for the phenomenon of St Vitus’ dance within which (as already between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) the case of tarantism could also find its place, as a species versus a genus. It is after all this tradition of dissertations that, in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, provided material and ideas for the invention of the category of choreomania. The recent new critical readings that have found it interesting to focus the spotlight on that concept, on its assumptions and cultural implications, will gain further depth from a careful consideration of the scientific discourse that, over a couple of centuries, had reasoned along the modern age of the clinical cases that were understood as its manifestations.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
