The accusations of treachey that according to our sources were brought against the Augusta Julia Domna during the reign of her husband Septimius Severus might be connected to her relationship with the cities of Syria, her homeland, which she might have tried to protect from the vexations of the powerful prefect of the Guard Fulvius Plautianus. The failed siege of Hatra, which Severus' troops were anxious to plunder, probably stoked the conflict between the Augusta and the prefect.

Abstract

The accusations of treachey that according to our sources were brought against the Augusta Julia Domna during the reign of her husband Septimius Severus might be connected to her relationship with the cities of Syria, her homeland, which she might have tried to protect from the vexations of the powerful prefect of the Guard Fulvius Plautianus. The failed siege of Hatra, which Severus' troops were anxious to plunder, probably stoked the conflict between the Augusta and the prefect.
