This essay analyzes the complex meaning of ressentiment, one of Nietzsche’s most famous conception — actually a conception-cum-emotion — and also the one he considered the most influent in human history. In order to understand its multi-faceted reality, we must read it together with the role played by the notions of “health” and “illness” in the millennia-long history of the various forms of civilizations and their alternance. We will therefore be able to appreciate the greatness, which even the ressentiment carries within itself, as well as its peculiar sort of positivity, and that the reasons why Nietzsche so vehemently opposes it are completely different from those expressed in the essentially fascist perspectives of the past.
