Abstract

The article seeks to define the conditions under which Manto, the female founder of Mantova according to many legends, is depicted in the Sala Grande (Mantua, Palazzo Ducale). The entire cycle is meant to celebrate the duke Guglielmo Gonzaga: for this reason, the role of Manto is carefully restricted and her position in the cycle asserts her subordinate role in the subsequent construction of Mantua as a powerful city, whose destiny was to be governed by the male rulers of the Gonzaga family.
