The article analyses the representation of individual and collective identity in the work of Zehra Cirak and Emine Sevgi Özdamar. By focusing on recurrent mythological motifs (Ikarus, Europa, Ulysses) in recent poems by Cirak and in the play Perikizi by Özdamar it examines the contours of a dynamic identity costruction which is not only definable as a transcultural one. Furthermore, it lays bare the attemps of both writers to confront traumatic history via rewriting myths.

Abstract

The article analyses the representation of individual and collective identity in the work of Zehra Cirak and Emine Sevgi Özdamar. By focusing on recurrent mythological motifs (Ikarus, Europa, Ulysses) in recent poems by Cirak and in the play Perikizi by Özdamar it examines the contours of a dynamic identity costruction which is not only definable as a transcultural one. Furthermore, it lays bare the attemps of both writers to confront traumatic history via rewriting myths.
