The article deals with the active role played by many well and lesser known anglophone travelers to Mantua, who mostly recorded their views about the city in published journals, or studied the artistic output of its most outstanding painters (Blashfield), or were inspired by its landscape for an essay or for a play (Vernon Lee), or made it the setting of a historical novel (Edith Wharton), or lovingly evoked its silence and peace in a poem (Symons).
