Starting from the medical deontological language, there is a widespread belief that a good physician is one who acts with “science and conscience”, elements without which the refusal to intervene becomes appropriate. This principle is so deeply rooted in medical tradition that it extends beyond the boundaries of medical professionals to influence the social sphere. Therefore, it is of interest not only to the medical field but also to a broader ethical reflection on the role of the physician, to investigate this indication, discover its references in the history of the Code of Medical Ethics, and contribute to interpreting its meaning, which is still evolving.

Abstract

Starting from the medical deontological language, there is a widespread belief that a good physician is one who acts with “science and conscience”, elements without which the refusal to intervene becomes appropriate. This principle is so deeply rooted in medical tradition that it extends beyond the boundaries of medical professionals to influence the social sphere. Therefore, it is of interest not only to the medical field but also to a broader ethical reflection on the role of the physician, to investigate this indication, discover its references in the history of the Code of Medical Ethics, and contribute to interpreting its meaning, which is still evolving.
