Learners of English as an L2, in Italy, and, in this case,,at the University of Verona in Northern Italy, are at the heart of Kachru's (1986) expanding circle. As such certain questions need to be asked about which English they should study. Many aspire to use the language for professional or social reasons and, as such, will be part of the English as a Lingua Franca community. This article asks which model of English they should be studying, what makes a "variant form" acceptable and when we should speak of error, all of which are questions that teachers, materials writers and examination boards working with English as an L2 are asking themselves.

Abstract
