This article examines some of the difficulties related to 'letting go' for teachers who tend to want to be in control of their lessons. The advantages of handing over the control to the learners, however, in a learner-centred approach to teaching are manifold, but still require careful structuring and scaffolding by teachers. The role of the teacher in this type of approach that fosters learner autonomy is changing and whilst for many letting go may be a frightening experience that takes them out of their comfort zones, it brings benefits that are worth exploring and encouraging.

Abstract
