Ethnographer, writer and maybe even spy Carla Serena visited the Russian Empire three times, namely in 1874, 1876 – 77 and 1881. Not only was Carla the first European woman who travelled alone in the Caucasus, but she was also the first person who took pictures of Abkhazia. After her journeys, Carla published several articles and volumes in which she described the peoples in the South of the Russian Empire; although she sometimes describes them as savage, those peoples are depicted with a sincere interest and curiosity.

Abstract
