Some recent studies have reported contrasting results in the socio-emotional adjustment of adolescents with cochlear implants. The present study assesses self-esteem, emotional autonomy, and loneliness in adolescents with cochlear implants (CIs), in comparison with their hearing peers. The participants were 20 adolescents (8 males, 12 females, aged between 12 and 17 years) with CIs and 20 typically developing adolescents individually matched for age, gender and socio-economic status (TD-group). The Italian versions of the Emotional Autonomy Scale, the Louvain Loneliness Scale for Children and Adolescents and the Multidimensional self-esteem Test were administered to each participant. Furthermore, the emotional experience reported while at the hospital were considered for each participant in the CI-group. Data analyses showed no significant differences between groups in the socio-emotional dimensions. Individuals who received the CI early displayed higher self-esteem than did adolescents who received CIs later (p = .03). Furthermore, the number of emotional terms produced was positively related to self-esteem [r(19) = .53; p = .04] and negatively related to parent-related loneliness [r(19) = -.60; p = .02]. The early use of CIs has an impact on the individual’s self-esteem and parents' support has an important role in socio-emotional adjustment, especially in the CI-group.
