The Italian self-taught historian Giovanni De Rubertis had a singular role in the history of Slavistics of the second half of the 19th century: owing to him, international scientists were able to familiarize with the small southern-Slavic communities in Molise, a region in southern Italy. The first slavist who directed his attention towards De Rubertisí discovery was O. Bodjanskiy, but it was not until the first ìslavisticî travel in Molise in 1870, when V. Makushev and M. Drinov met De Rubertis, that an authentic scientific interest appeared. The memory of this travel is preserved owing to the letters that De Rubertis wrote to both Makushev and Drinov.
