This article analyses the entries, meanings and expressions marked political in three contemporary bilingual French-Italian dictionaries. The study intends to answer a few questions. To what extent can the lexical units marked political be considered as belonging to some specialized field? How many of these words are given an independent entry? How many of them simply overlap a particular meaning of an entry? The hypothesis put forward here is that these units are characterized by a low level of specialization, which can be measured using the criterion of monosemy. This class of words is then analysed from a quantitative point of view before concentrating on a few salient categories: neologisms, euphemisms and political correction, referential and semantic gaps and Italianisms used in the French political lexicon. The lexical equivalences, which the three dictionaries propose, provide an interesting reflection of French and Italian political traditions.
