This paper analyzes the canto XVI of Dante’s Inferno, focusing on some aspects of its structure and its content. In particular it highlights the traditional interpretation of the vice of sodomy which affected the sinners of the seventh circle (Guido Guerra, Tegghiaio Al- dobrandi and Jacopo Rusticucci). The paper goes on to discuss a new hypothesis, proposed in some recent readings, in which Dante’s mention of Guido Guerra is evidence that the poet, while writing this canto, was hosted in Casentino by the count Guido Salvatico, a de- scendant of the same Guido Guerra. New and unpublished documents seem to invalidate this hypothesis.
