The need for increasing awareness on how to measure the efficacy and effectiveness of psychiatric care is emphasized in this paper. Comprehensiveness, multiaxiality and specificity are proposed as guidelines for future developments. The past year's literature is discussed with particular regard to studies on the effectiveness of alternative treatments to hospitalization. The relevance of the subjective view of users is outlined.
