The effects of pulsed elctromagnetic fields (PEMFs) on peripheral regeneration were evaluated in the rat by means of morphometry and quantitative analysis. Rats subjected to atraumatic transection of the sciatic nerve and fascicular suture were exposed daily to (PEMFs for 12 hours over periods of 2 4 or 8 weeks. After 2 weeks no regenerating fibres were detectable 10 mm distal to the lesion; after 4 weeks, treated animals showed a degree of nerve regeneration significantly higher to that of the controls, but this difference was not confirmed after 8 weeks. The results suggest that PEMFs exert an accelerating effect on nerve regeneration, which proves morphometrically detectable only in the early phases of the repair process.
