This paper explains how in 19th century national literatures proved in many cases to be essential to the building of national states. Now, in the age of globalization, national literatures have no longer a function, except in the academic world, where they are instrumental to perpetuate power and create new positions. The European Community lost the chance to create a cultural community by NOT creating a common high-school literary curriculum composed by the masterpieces of all European literatures.
