Philosophy is cosmopolitan. It is immune from being influenced by the idea of a “nation,” it does not depend on any specific linguistic and historical-cultural background; and it tends anyway to oppose all nationalist thinking. Despite the crisis of the notion itself of “national identity,” the Ueberweg not only dedicates a whole volume to Italian eigthteenth-century philosophy, it also reconstructs it at the regional level by considering the catchment basins of the individual universities, academies, and scientific societies. The volume shows the usefulness of uniting the approach of the “philosophical history of philosophy” with that of the “historical history of philosophy” on the basis of the interdisciplinary method of what used to be the history of ideas and is now intellectual history.
