The Conquest of the Near East by Alexander the Great provides an interesting study case: the Macedonian King, his Companions and his soldiers marched for a decade (334-324) from the Straits to the Indian borders, and return, among Asiatic people, different for customs, languages, religions etc. At Susa, in 324, Alexander held weddings with Asiatic women for himself, for the Companions (about a hundred) and for about ten thousand soldiers. We can investigate the real purposes in the mind of Alexander: a multicultural politics or a social and military policy?
