Evaluated the seasonal variation of suicides in Italy during 1969-2984, using harmonic analysis to examine the effects of gender, rural vs urban setting, and geographical location (Northern, Central, or Southern). 39,377 men and 17,630 women committed suicide during the study period. Suicide rates (SRs) were higher for males than females, and urban SRs were greater than rural SRs. Seasonality in deaths from suicide was higher in rural than in urban settings, in males than in females, and in Southern Italy than in Northern Italy. However, there appears to be no consistent North-South geographic trend. ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)
