Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in pregnancy: analysis onf 43 consecutive cases followed at a single italian institution

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a conditionthat often develops in young women and, consequently,physicians are frequently asked to treat or monitor pregnantwomen with a diagnosis or a history of ITP. In spiteof the frequency of this complication in pregnant women,literature data on maternal and neonatal outcome in ITPpatients are scarce.For this reason, we have conducted a retrospective studyon all obstetric patients with ITP who delivered at theDepartment of Obstetric and Gynaecology of the UniversityHospital of Verona from January 1990 to December2005. the cases here reported further testify thelow hemorrhagic risk in infants and mothers. Most motherswith ITP can proceed with their pregnancies and deliverinfants without complications. Nevertheless, the closecooperation between hematologist, obstetrician, and pediatricianis essential for the correct management of bothmothers and babies.
