In his recent book On Reduplication, Allan Bäck discusses many passages pertaining to the history of the problem of qualification and begins, of course, with Analytica Priora I, c. 38 (49a 12-49b 3). However, Bäck surprisingly neglects the tradition of the commentaries on Ethica Nicomachea I, c. 7 (1098a 29-42), where Aristotle speaks about a carpenter and a geometrician looking at the same right angle. The former is content with an approximation to it, which satisfies the purpose of his work; the latter, being a student of truth, looks for its essence or essential attributes. By privileging the standpoint of reduplicative syllogistic, Bäck apparently fails to recognize that the issue of reduplication has yielded a series of important contributions to the theory of knowledge and to metaphysics as well. In fact, as shown below, Averroes himself calls for a connection between Analytica Priora I, c. 38 and Ethica Nicomachea I, c. 7.

Abstract
