In her first published short story, Caterina Edwards illustrates the problems of linguistic and cultural diversity from the point of view of an Italian woman in Western Canada: Maria. In Maria's (few) words, thoughts, and dreams, Italy becomes the nostalgic materialisation of the past she has once relinquished and yet keeps rising to the surface of her memory, embodying her wish for an impossible return journey.
