In this paper, I compare Nietzsche’s conception of the tyrant to Plato’s, showing how the former is constructed as opposed to the latter. While avoiding here the problem whether Nietzsche’s reflections on the subject are essentially opposed to Plato’s, it is quite apparent that the figure of the tyrant, through its involving notions such as self-sufficiency and self-rule, at the same time bridges the two philosophers closer, just as it pushes them further away, in a relation where attraction and repulsion, from Nietzsche’s part, are as equally distributed as they are inextricably intertwined.

Abstract

In this paper, I compare Nietzsche’s conception of the tyrant to Plato’s, showing how the former is constructed as opposed to the latter. While avoiding here the problem whether Nietzsche’s reflections on the subject are essentially opposed to Plato’s, it is quite apparent that the figure of the tyrant, through its involving notions such as self-sufficiency and self-rule, at the same time bridges the two philosophers closer, just as it pushes them further away, in a relation where attraction and repulsion, from Nietzsche’s part, are as equally distributed as they are inextricably intertwined.
